Meaning:
Maathai was active in the National Council of Kenyan Women from 1976 to 1987 and was on the board from 1981 to 1987. It was here in 1977 that she first came up with the idea of planting trees together to improve the living conditions of everyone. This later developed into the Green Belt Movement.
